James Roy Burton

Mr. James Roy Burton, 94, of Commonwealth Senior Living in Onancock and formerly of Market Street, Onancock, husband of the late Gloria Chase Burton, passed away on May 1, 2019, at Commonwealth Senior Living.  He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Born on August 29, 1924, in Locustville, he was the son of the late Mortimer James Burton and Margaret Susan Mears Burton. He served faithfully as a sergeant in the U. S. Army and served overseas in Hawaii, the Philippines, Okinawa and Korea and was the recipient of three Bronze Stars. He was a carpet installer and has been a member of Zion Baptist Church since 1968 where he participated in Bible Study and had many faithful friends, especially James Denny and Pastor Matthews. He was also a carpenter and loved to hunt and fish and share his home grown pecans. Mr. Burton was a great conversationalist and really enjoyed his visits with all of his family and friends, especially his great niece and her family.

Survivors include a nephew, Martin F. Willett Jr., and wife, Patricia, of Patton Pa.; great-nieces, Michele Lynn (Kevin) Greer, of Charlestown, W.Va.; and Aimee Louise (Stephen) Westrick, of Vinco, Pa.; and great-great nieces and nephews, Tyler and Hannah Greer and Jensen and Giles Westrick. 

Mr. Burton was preceded in death by parents: Mortimer James Burton and Margaret Susan Mears Burton; brother, Otho Lee Burton; sister, Ethel Burton (Charles) Smith; sister, Lola Burton (Martin) Willett, and a baby sister.

A funeral service will be held on Sunday, May 12, at 2 p.m. from the graveside of the Parksley Cemetery in Parksley with the Rev. Andrew Matthews and the Rev. John Cullop officiating.

Arrangements are by the Thornton Funeral Home in Parksley.
