Astronomy Night Focuses on the Moon at NASA Visitor Center

May 10, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

The NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Center will host the second astronomy night of 2019 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Friday, May 10, featuring Earth’s Moon.

Humans last set foot on the Moon in 1972 with the completion of the Apollo program. Following the Apollo missions, robotic missions, such as LADEElaunched from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, continue to add to our scientific knowledge of the Moon.

Today, NASA is leading a sustainable return to the Moon with commercial and international partners to expand human presence in space and bring back new knowledge and opportunities.

Moon Lights the Way

This lunar-themed event begins with an astronomy presentation in the Visitor Center’s auditorium at 7:30 p.m. followed by night sky observations through high-powered telescopes operated by the Delmarva Space Sciences Foundation on the grounds of the Visitor Center from 8 – 10 p.m. In addition, hands-on space science activities, videos, and astronomy resources will be available from 8 – 9 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public. The astronomy presentation will take place regardless of the weather conditions. However, the telescope viewing is subject to cancellation due to inclement weather.

The NASA Visitor Center, located on Va. Rt. 175 about six miles from U. S. Route 13 and five miles from Chincoteague, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During the week of May 6 -10 the Visitor Center will be closed to the public due to renovation work. The Astronomy Night event will occur regardless of day-time closure Friday, May 10.  Admission is free.
