Blue Star Memorial Dedication: Honoring Those Who Have Served Our Country

April 26, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

It is with great pleasure that we recognize all currently active military and all veterans at a Blue Star Memorial Dedication. All are invited to attend.

This program, begun in 1944 as a memorial to veterans of World War II, continues today through a National Garden Club program that covers thousands of miles across these 50 united states. In WW II the Blue Star was an icon seen on flags and banners in homes, churches and businesses for sons and daughters away at war.

“We’re hoping that the entire Eastern Shore will come out for this moving, patriotic ceremony,” said Wanda Smith, co-chair. “Please bring your veterans – some attending will be in uniform – and wear your red, white and blue. We also encourage you to bring any special pictures of your loved ones to place on a memory table alongside others. I am proud to display my father’s Coast Guard picture. We’ll have light refreshments and some seating. You are welcome to bring your own seating as well.”

This marker and program are being co-sponsored by the Tidewater District of Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel District, and Ye Accawmacke Garden Club. It is the cooperation of these groups that makes this such a special event. The marker will be on permanent display at the Welcome Center for all to see.

Please contact Wanda Smith at 787-4744 with any questions or to let her know of veterans that will be present.
