Mr. Stewart Powell Womble, 91, of Cheriton, passed away Jan. 1, 2019, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock.

Mr. Womble was born Jan. 20, 1927, in Bayview, to Samuel D. and Mary P. Womble. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Maryon Timm Womble.

Mr. Womble worked in the insurance business for more than 40 years. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. Mr. Womble was a dedicated member and deacon of Cheriton Baptist Church. He was known as a compassionate man who spent his entire life caring for multiple family members. His compassion for his fellow man extended into the community where he served; as mayor of Cheriton, member of Cheriton Town Council, and the Suntrust Bank Board, as well as a member of the Lion’s Club and Masons. When not busy serving others, Mr. Womble could be found enjoying a round of golf with lifelong buddies.

Mr. Womble is also survived by daughters, Sallie W. James (Frank) and Debbie Vanlandingham (Tommy); grandchildren, Stewart Coleman, James (Katie) and Sarah J. Argüello (Norman); great-grandchildren, Emerson Grace James, Delaney Claire James, Xavier Allan Argüello, and Maryon Josephine Argüello.

Mr. Womble is preceded in death by his stepbrothers, John Reid Womble and Samuel Womble, and stepsisters, Veda Womble, Ruth Womble and Louise Womble. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2019, at Cheriton Baptist Church with the Dr. Charles Peterson officiating. A private interment will follow at Cape Charles Cemetery.
