A late afternoon fire Friday claimed a Townsend house that was under renovation and damaged a neighboring home. There were no injuries, said Cheriton Volunteer Fire Company Chief Thomas Moore.

The Eastern Shore 9-1-1 center took the call at 4:01 p.m., according to Moore. “The first engine arrived at 4:14,” he said. “When we got there, she was fully involved.”

“A house fire is an automatic five-company alert,” Moore said. Units from Cape Charles, Eastville, Nassawadox and Exmore also responded, along with tankers from Painter and Wachapreague.

The structure was between two other homes, one of which sustained heat damage to its siding and windows.

The fire was under control by 5:18, and firefighters departed the scene just before dark.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
