Fatal crash on Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel

One person died and another person was injured in a head-on collision on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel Saturday.

The crash happened at around 4:39 p.m. on Fisherman Island, according to a press release from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

A four-door sedan traveling northbound ran off the roadway, and witnesses reported that the driver tried to regain control of the vehicle, but overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lane, striking a pickup truck head-on.

The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Hampton Roads.

Cape Charles Rescue Service, Cheriton Volunteer Fire Company, and Cape Charles Volunteer Fire Company responded to the scene.  

The bridge-tunnel was closed to all traffic for around 1 1/2 hours.

The names of the victims were not immediately released, pending notification of next-of-kin.
