Mr. Samuel Arthur Merritt, 81, of Parksley, passed away March 25, 2020, at Shore Rehabilitation Center in Parksley.
He was born on Chincoteague Island, Jan. 30, 1939, to Everett and Oneita (Daisey) Foster.
He was a member of Drummondtown Baptist Church, Accomack Masonic Lodge #243, Order of the Eastern Star #62, Royal Arch #75, and he attended Central Lodge #300. He retired from the United States Coast Guard after twenty years of service as a Master Chief. He graduated from Chincoteague High School with the class of 1957.
Sam is survived by his three sons, Jeffrey Alan Merritt and his companion April Buchanan, of Atlantic, Keith Merritt and his wife Valerie, of Atlantic, and Kevin Merritt and his wife Kathy of Timberville, Va.; two grandsons, Sean Merritt, of California, and Bill Kinkead and his wife Cami, of New Market, Va.; granddaughter, Jenna Merritt, of Atlantic; two great-grandchildren; companion and caregiver, Sylvia Parks, of Parksley; sister-in-law, Barbara Merritt, of Cape Charles; several nieces, nephews, and many others that called him Pop Pop.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Daniel Keith Merritt, and sister, Agnes Lane.
Due to the current situation with the COVID-19 virus, the funeral services will be private graveside limited to the immediate family only.
The family would like to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
