Mrs. Sylvia Rosalie Lurty passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the age of 79 in Virginia Beach, Va. Originally from Vineland, N.J., Sylvia resided on Smith Beach in Eastville for the past 35 years. Sylvia worked as a volunteer and secretary at Hungars Cure Parish for 30 years prior to retiring. She was a faithful and active member of Christ Episcopal Church in Eastville, where she was also a stalwart chorister, vestry-person, committee member, and guild worker. She enjoyed arts and crafts, especially knitting, and crossword puzzles, and made countless crafts for the church bazaar every year. She loved animals, and treated her dog, Mick, maternally, and with so much care. When she was younger, she spent time traveling, and cited her time in Switzerland as one of her favorite vacations.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Sara Jane Long Wallace; her father, Gene Wallace; and her husband, Clarence “Butch” Lurty, whom she was married to for 42 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Vicky Kendall; her son, Richard Lurty, and his wife, Becky; her grandchildren, Jeffrey, Amy, Cassie, Brittany, Christopher, and Trevor Barnes; and her great-granddaughters, Valerie, Charlotte, Lydia, and Eleanor.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to her close friends and neighbors Jim Dixon and Amy Lines and many close friends and neighbors in her church and Smith Beach community who she considered to be her family.

She was a gracious woman with a giving heart and will be greatly missed.

The family requests that the funeral services be kept private, with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 367, Eastville, VA 23347 or the SPCA Eastern Shore Inc., P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418.
