Box Truck Goes Overboard on Bridge-Tunnel; Emergency Personnel Searching

A two-axle, six-tire box truck has gone overboard on the east side of the northbound span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel between North Channel Bridge and the northernmost island.
A bridge-tunnel press release said the single-vehicle accident occurred around 8:20 a.m. today, Dec. 29, at milepost 14 northbound.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Virginia Marine Resources Commission, and local police and fire departments are searching for a person in the water.
“Witnesses reported seeing a man exit the tractor trailer and drift west,” the U.S. Coast Guard reported in a separate press release.
A video posted to Facebook showed a partially submerged truck identified by the photographer as a “Cloverland milk truck.”
A reporter’s call to Cloverland Dairy has not been returned.
The facility has sustained guardrail and curb damage. Bridge-tunnel maintenance crews are responding to make emergency repairs.
A single lane of traffic is open in the northbound direction.
CBBT Police are still investigating the circumstances of the accident. Virginia Beach Fire & Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard are assisting.
