Hard Lessons Learned

Dear Editor:

On May 26, my wife, son, and I went to the Star East Cemetery on Church Road in Accomac to cut the grass. This is something that we have done for approximately 55 years, mostly every other week during grass cutting season.

We normally cut more than just our family plots, but as much of the cemetery as we can possibly do to keep the area looking good. Sometimes this work is most of the front and way back for some distance. Sometimes we also actually pay a person to help us do all of the work.

We worked this day in 90 degree-plus temperatures and for approximately two hours. This work included mowing, edging, blowing off grass clippings from graves, and putting U.S. flags on family veterans’ graves.

After completing this work, we loaded up the equipment — all except the Stihl BG66L blower (purchased Oct. 31, 2020, and for a total price of $242.14) that we used last. I forgot to load the blower from the ground on the other side of the vehicle.

We left for home and at the point that we realized that the blower was missing, returned to the cemetery. In the short period of time the blower had been taken by someone. This person watched us work and the moment we left, went to the middle of the cemetery and took the blower and probably watched us returning to get it.

The blower can and will be replaced. To the person who took the blower, you have taught my 14-year-old son who works hard with us that no matter how many good deeds one may do in life, there is always evil around that will take away from them.
