Mr. Thomas James Helwig, 92, of Chincoteague Island, passed away July 17, 2021, at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock.

He was born in Verga, N.J., Feb. 16, 1929, a son to the late Richard and Edith (Moon) Helwig. Tom attended local schools in Verga, located in South Jersey. After high school, he and his brother, Charles, enlisted in the military. He served in the U.S. Army for four years and fought in WWII. Tom was a skilled carpenter and he built boats, both interior and exterior and was part of the carpenters union. During his free time, he enjoyed flying his personal plane. He became a Freemason through the induction of his close friend, Richard Ackerman.

Thomas is survived by his loving spouse of 13 years, Patricia Helwig, of Chincoteague Island; two daughters, Laura Lynn Wildt and her husband, Mark, of Whitesboro, Texas, and Edith Jane Hooper and her husband, Daniel, of Fort Pierce, Fla.; two sisters, Anna Ruth Finocchio and her husband, Nicholas, of Chincoteague Island, and Janet Marie Helwig, of Chincoteague Island; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Pamela Jean Resnick; and five siblings.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2021, at 5 p.m., at the Island Baptist Church, Chincoteague Island, with Pastor Phil Bennicoff officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Island Baptist Church, 3380 Willow St., Chincoteague Island, VA 23336.
