Chance of Severe Weather Later Today

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a briefing highlighting the risk areas and timing for strong to severe storms this afternoon and evening (Tuesday, Aug. 31).

Threats: Scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop across the Piedmont on east toward the coast later today. The primary threats will be damaging winds, localized heavy rain, and frequent lightning. 

Location: Mainly north of Virginia Route 460 The highest risk is primarily north of Interstate 64.

Timing: 4 pm to midnight. 

Overview and Impacts:

  • Strong to severe storms could result in areas of 50-60 mph wind gusts. Over the Bay and coastal waters expect winds of 40 kt with the storms.
  • Locally heavy downpours may result in localized areas of minor flooding.
