Mrs. Alene “May” Lovett, 80, of Painter, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family. Born Oct. 14, 1941, in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late Lewis H. Howard and the late Sherry Hanes Howard.

Following high school, May began working as a secretary at the Pentagon. After nearly two decades apart, May was reunited with her high school boyfriend, Bob Lovett. In 1980, they were married and relocated to the Eastern Shore. May began working as the manager of Shore Bank until accepting a position as secretary at Ginsberg, Nottingham, and Mapp, where she later retired after 30 years with the firm. May enjoyed gardening and crafting, especially crocheting and sewing, though she was happiest when surrounded by loved ones and particularly when dancing the Jitterbug with Bob. Over the years, she planned countless family boating, camping, and fishing trips and always prepared an amazing dinner and dessert for birthdays and holidays. May was absolutely adored by her family, all of whom are grateful to have made so many beautiful memories with her.

Along with her parents, May was happily reunited with her late husband, Robert E. “Bob” Lovett Jr., as well as her sons, Robby and Steven Smith and Ricky Lovett, and brother, Alan Foster. She is survived by her daughter, Dawn M. Miller, of Parksley; son, Gregory A. Smith, and his wife, Sherry, of Painter; grandchildren, Kaitlynn M. Spence and her husband, Joseph, Brandon L. Smith and his wife, Tori, and Megan, Jayden, and Joseph Sandlin; sisters-in-law, Hazel Foster and Shirley Zimmerman and her husband, Jim; several cousins, to include her special cousin, Jeff Foster, and his family; and her great-grandbabies, who were the loves of her life. She also leaves behind her furbabies, Punkin and Nala, and her feathered baby, Lucky.

The family gathered for a private graveside service at the Onancock Cemetery.

Contributions may be made to the Eastern Shore SPCA, P.O. Box 164, Onley, VA 23418.
