Warriors and Ponies Face Off in Monday Night Double-Header

The Nandua Warriors girls varsity basketball teams hosted the Chincoteague Ponies Monday, Jan. 24. The Ponies defeated the Warriors 37-18. 

Both the Warriors and Ponies struggled to generate offense in the first and second quarter. At halftime, the Ponies led 10-5. In the third quarter, the Ponies switched to a fast-paced offense and became more aggressive with their rebounding. The Warriors didn’t surrender quietly. They locked down defensively and forced several turnovers, but the Ponies outscored them 27-13 in the second half to win the game. 

Emma Jackson led the Ponies’ offense with 9 points. Lindsay O’Shea had 8 points. Alex McComb had 7 points. 

Bonneisha Braxton led the Warriors’ offense with 7 points. Reghan Hintz had 4 points. Kallie Williams had 3 points. 

Later the same evening, the Warriors and Ponies boys varsity basketball teams faced each other. The Warriors won the matchup 66-49.

The Ponies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and appeared poised to dominate the first quarter, until Ny’Zir Dix kickstarted the Warriors’ offense with a midrange jump shot. By halftime, the Warriors were on top 33-25. In the second half, the Ponies continued battling with their fast-paced offense, but the Warriors never relinquished their lead, outscoring the Ponies 33-24 to capture the victory. 

Dix led the Warriors’ offense with 26 points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Jeremiah Riley had 23 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Brandon Giddens had 6 points, five rebounds, and one block. Malik Dorn had 4 points, five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. KJ Pettit had 3 points, five rebounds, six assists, and one block. Caleb Chrisman had 2 points, three rebounds, and one steal. Derrick Harmon had one point, two rebounds, and one steal. 

Jordan Harper led the Ponies’ offense with 16 points, four rebounds, five assists, and one steal. Landon King had 14 points, eight rebounds, eight assists, and one steal. Jake Harper had 10 points and seven assists. Wyatt Revell had 6 points, five rebounds, and one steal. Johnathan Holloway had 2 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Adam Williams had 1 point, three rebounds, one assist, and two steals. 

The Warriors and Ponies faced each other again the following night at Chincoteague High School. The Lady Ponies defeated the Lady Warriors again with a score of 37-19. The Warriors boys varsity team defeated the Ponies’ boys varsity team again with a final score of 66-43.

The Warriors girls and boys basketball teams played again Thursday, Jan. 27. They traveled to Oak Hall to face Arcadia High School. On the same night, the Chincoteague Ponies traveled to Eastville to face Northampton.
