The following is a briefing from National Weather Service Wakefield, Va., as of 6:00 a.m., 5/16/2022, highlighting the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms expected this afternoon and evening.
Overview and Impacts:
- Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms will be possible across the area this afternoon and evening. Damaging wind gusts and large hail are the primary threats.
- A few tornadoes cannot be ruled out, with the area of greatest concern locally along and north of I-64 including portions of central VA, northern neck and the lower eastern shore.
- Expected storm timing is between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. this evening. Storms develop over central VA between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. then move quickly east to the coast.
