Mr. John Walter “Johnny” Jones Jr., 88, passed away Friday, May 13, 2022, at his home in Onancock, with his loving wife, Marilyn, by his side. Born Feb. 2, 1934, in Pungoteague, he was the son of the late John Walter Jones and the late Gladys Guy Smith.

Johnny was known for his meticulous attention to detail in all aspects of his life, especially when it came to his career. For many years, he worked for Bayshore Concrete in Cape Charles, becoming one of the most well-respected craftsmen in his field. He later relocated to Georgia to work for John D. Stevens Inc. in Atlanta. His knowledge and extensive expertise were instrumental during the expansion project for the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, now ranked the world’s busiest airport.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Dr. John Burton, of Gainesville, Fla., Julie Halstead (David), of Blountsville, Tenn., and Arin Bates, of Atlanta; grandchildren, Ashley Murrell, Hannah Gavin, and Nick Bates; as well as several nieces and nephews and their families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Ellen Jones Custis, and her husband, Milton Nock Custis Jr.

Funeral services will be conducted from the graveside at the Pungoteague Community Church Cemetery on Saturday, May 21, 2022, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Bobby Carroll Huether officiating.
