Ms. Amy Virginia Mallette, born June 29, 1984, was born and raised on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Amy was an avid hunter, fisher, lover of seafood, and gardener. She earned her B.S. in government and international politics at George Mason University in 2006 during which she also participated in a study abroad program in France (the language which she became interested in during a course at Nandua High School). While in high school she participated in an environmental leadership opportunity with NATO in Germany. Amy had an innate love for the environment. She was a graduate of the Virginia Natural Resource Leadership Institute where she learned about issues relevant to Virginia and adjacent states/watersheds. Amy practiced her passions on the Shore and, most recently on the Panhandle of Florida. She was a lifelong lover of nature and the outdoors, spending much of her time in, on, and around the waters in Virginia and Florida. Amy lived simply and sustainably and was known for her spicy cooking, humorous nature, strong opinions, and her great laugh.

Amy was diagnosed with diabetes at the tender age of two after an extra round of childhood treatments. She struggled with the chronic Type 1 diabetes disease for decades. On May 18, 2022, she lost the battle and passed from diabetic complications. Amy was 37 years young.

Amy and her family were active in the American Diabetes Association and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. She was one of the youngest persons to use an insulin pump to better manage her brittle diabetes. As part of a campaign to heighten diabetes awareness, while in middle school Amy had the opportunity to meet Ms. America, another young person struggling with the disease.

Amy is survived by her mother, Karen Terwilliger; her father, Steve Mallette; her siblings, Sarah and Zack Mallette; and her dear friend, Stan Bass.

The family plans a private celebration of Amy’s life at a date to be determined.

Donations in Amy’s memory can be made to the Eastern Shore Rural Health, Diabetes Support Fund, 20280 Market St., Onancock, VA 23417, which will provide emergency assistance to those uninsured individuals who pay exorbitant costs for insulin and other diabetes supplies essential for managing the disease. Special thanks to EMTs and the local volunteers who provide invaluable services to our community.
