What Didn’t Happen

Following a letter from a reader, we invited commentary on the House Select Committee’s Jan. 6 hearings. This is a response to the hearings.

Dear Editor:

I have no doubt that the Jan. 6 Select Committee will detail the actual truth about what happened that fateful day. As important as what happened on Capitol Hill, far more important to America, is what did NOT happen in the Oval Office that day.

On the afternoon of Jan. 6, 2021, President Donald J. Trump held the entire nation in the palm of his hand. It would have been very easy for him to go on national television and in 30 seconds use the power and authority of his office to declare the start of the Second American Revolution and then to order his millions-strong supporters to take up arms to reclaim America and to set it right again. At that moment America would have been plunged into civil war; a civil war already happening inside the Capitol Building itself.

What happened on Capitol Hill was important. Utterly eclipsing that importance is what didn’t happen in the Oval Office that day.
