Bomb Threat at ESCC A Hoax, Police Say

Staff Report — A bomb threat Tuesday about Eastern Shore Community College, in Melfa, shut down a building until officers were able to search it.

No explosive device was found.

According to Accomack County Sheriff Todd Wessells, the Sheriff’s Office received a report around 1:13 p.m. that a potential explosive device was on the second floor of the college building.

When deputies arrived, they immediately started to evacuate the building.
K-9s from the Norfolk Police Department, which specialize in detecting bombs, were requested to respond.

The K-9s searched the building thoroughly and no explosive device was found.

Multiple other colleges and universities across the Tidewater region received similar threats Tuesday and bomb threats have been made against colleges and universities throughout the United States in the past week, according to a press release from Wessells.

The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Norfolk Police Department, Eastern Shore Community College Police and Security, and the Accomack County Department of Public Safety.
