By Stefanie Jackson – Adam Charney is likely to be Cape Charles’ next mayor, according to election results as of 10 p.m. Tuesday night.

Charney had about 65% of the vote compared to his opponent, Tim McLatchy, who had 34% of the vote with three of four precincts reporting.

The two candidates, both of whom own homes in Bay Creek and moved to Cape Charles within the last decade, were seeking to take over for longtime resident and former harbor master, Mayor Smitty Dize, who did not seek a second term.

Jim Sturgis, who has been Eastville’s mayor for the last 12 years, likely will remain in that position, with nearly 56% of the vote with three of four precincts reporting as of 10 p.m.

His opponent, Northampton High School Principal Heather Marsh, trailed with nearly 43% of the vote.
