‘Death on the Line’: A Winter Evening with Historical Fiction Author Carol Amorosi

It’s 1763. For 80 years, skirmishes have erupted along the controversial border of Pennsylvania and Maryland. The
king sent astronomer Charles Mason and surveyor Jeremiah Dixon to resolve the issue using the latest in 18 th – century technology. But native tribes have contested the pair’s survey. The two colonies have contested it. No
matter how accurate it is, no one is willing to accept it.
Eager to please and desiring a new life in the colonies, Angus Mackay, a young Scotsman, is hired as the duo’s
assistant. When Angus stumbles on a dead body, there are suspects galore: native tribes; locals on each side who
spy on one another; a gun-toting minister; and a sheriff who’d like nothing more than to arrest Angus. Suddenly the game has changed from defining a line on the ground to defining the line between good and evil. Can Angus wade through the growing number of suspects and trails to learn the truth and in the process find acceptance for
himself?
Set against a backdrop of historical events and figures from the past, “Death on the Line” is a murder mystery in
the style of a classic cozy with an amateur sleuth. It is the first book in the Mackay Mystery series. Carol Amorosi,
author, historian, and former Eastern Shore of Virginia Historical Society docent, will share from Germany her new
work of historical fiction, the first in a series, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26. The Historical Society will host the

For years, Amorosi has put her passion for history, travel, and the outdoors to work as an interpreter for a variety of
time periods: from the Romans to the Middle Ages to the American Revolution. While living on the Eastern Shore
just a few years ago, Carol volunteered as a docent conducting tours at Onancock’s Ker Place, which houses the
Historical Society. She served as a member of the 7th Virginia Regiment. During the couple’s tenure in Italy, she
took part in the Pompeii Food & Drink Project, exploring the eating and drinking habits of that city’s residents. She
said she eagerly looks forward to exploring the Romans again in Malta this coming summer.
