Eastern Shore Bird Club Presents: 50 Years of Migratory Bird Protection at the Virginia Coast Reserve

TOPIC: Building Population Resiliency of Virginia’s Nesting Shorebirds.
GUEST SPEAKER: Alex Wilke, Coastal Scientist with The Nature Conservancy’s
Virginia Coast Reserve (VCR).
LOCATION: Commonwealth Senior Living at Eastern Shore, 23610 North Street,
Onancock, VA
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
Alex has worked with shorebirds along Virginia’s coast since 2002 and currently
manages the Virginia Coast Reserve’s Migratory Bird Program.  She works with federal,
state and academic partners to advance migratory bird protection in Virginia, as well as
throughout the Atlantic Flyway.  Alex will reflect on decades of management successes
for species such as American Oystercatchers and federally threatened Piping Plovers
and provide an overview of the current status of these populations in Virginia.  She will
also discuss emerging threats such as climate change and sea level rise and what the
conservation community is doing to prepare for and inform future management
challenges.
This presentation is free and open to the public.
