ESVA Juneteenth Festival Celebrates 20th Year

June 15, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

For two decades, the ESVA Juneteenth Festival has celebrated and promoted cultural
diversity in our communities across the Eastern Shore of Virginia. It pays tribute to the
principles of freedom, honors African-American accomplishments, encourages strong
family structure, and emphasizes liberty and equality for every citizen. This year the
event, the oldest known festival to celebrate the end of slavery in the U.S. and the only
Juneteenth celebration on the ESVA, coincides with the 400 th year milestone for African-
Americans in Virginia. It is set for Saturday, June 15 th , 2019, from 12 noon to 4:00 PM in
the Exmore Town Park, Exmore, Virginia.

Alvy Powell, an internationally acclaimed vocalist and Northampton County resident,
will serve as the official Grand Marshall for the 20 th Juneteenth celebration here on the
ESVA which opens with the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation. The reading will
be followed by gospel performances, poetic reflections, music, games/contests, food
and family fun.

For 2019, the festival is combined with a Health Fair co-sponsored by the Eastern Shore
Community Service Network Inc.; Northampton NAACP Health Committee; Bethel
Baptist Church Health Committee, and Northampton Medical Services Foundation. The
day kicks off with a “Walk for Good Health” hosted by the Community Unity Day
Coalition and Sickle Cell Association. Registration for the walk, a Family Fun Day Event,
begins at 10:00 am.
